We found our stay here quite magical. The ryokan is in a lovely setting in the hills surrounded by beautiful maples and bamboo. There is a very warm welcome from Masuo on arrival. We loved the traditions involved in our stay from removing our shoes to wear ‘house slippers’, choosing a kimono to wear and staying in a traditional very comfortable room lined with tatami mats. There are three private onsens and we tried them all. Lying in the onsens surrounded by beautiful maples and bamboo, listening to kites calling overhead under a starry sky was an unforgettable experience. There is a lovely library room as well as the traditional dining rooms. We had a private dining room when we stayed with our son and it was delightful. If you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience then I cannot recommend Shima Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan highly enough. You will not be disappointed !
