Every year on January 14th, Shima Onsen comes alive with two traditional festivals: the Torioi Festival and Dondo-Yaki.
Torioi Festival
The Torioi Festival dates back to the early Edo period (1600s).
This event was originally held to pray for the expulsion of pests and birds that harm crops.
At Shima Onsen, two large taiko drums are paraded through the streets of the hot spring town, filling the air with their rhythmic beats.
The largest Torioi Festival in the region is held around Nakanojo Station, where 11 drums parade through the town in a lively and energetic celebration.

Dondo-Yaki
Dondo-Yaki, a type of fire festival, is held across Japan on January 14th or 15th.
It involves burning New Year’s decorations, such as pine ornaments, to send off the Toshigami, a Shinto deity who visits homes during the New Year.
The flames symbolize gratitude and farewell to the deity.
At Shima Onsen, Dondo-Yaki is held in each village on January 14th, offering an intimate and heartfelt experience of this ancient tradition.

Come and enjoy these humble yet captivating festivals in the snowy, rustic charm of this countryside hot spring town!
