We visited Shima Onsen in 2018 during the late fall season. This was the third visit to Japan for my husband and me, but the first trip for our friend. We wanted him friend to experience something special, which is why we chose Shima Onsen and Kashiwaya Ryokan. Our stay was very relaxing and comfortable. The dinners we were served each of our two nights were fabulous and generous. Laying in the private onsens under the stars was magical. We liked the jazz music that played in the hallways –nothing like hearing John Coltrane while padding down the hallway late at night in a yukata, going to and from the onsens. The ryokan is cleaned and well-run, with friendly staff to help, despite our language barrier (we do not speak Japanese).
We still talk about our stay at Shima Onsen and Kashiwaya Ryokan nearly a year later! -
