We stayed at Kashiwaya Ryokan for one night in the Hana room, which features a large (easily fit two adults side by side) in-room onsen just for me and my girlfriend with a view of the Shima river, a dining/sitting room with TV, bedroom with two western-style beds and a small TV, powder room/sink, and a separate private toilet room with another sink. This particular room was well-equipped, stocked with toiletries, towels, a mini-bar, and the beds were very comfortable.
We were warmly greeted by the staff upon entering, check-in was very easy, and several staff spoke decent English to me, so much so that I was discouraged to practice my Japanese (hahaha). We scheduled at what time we would like to have dinner and breakfast and they explained all of the facilities to us very well. Dinner was served directly to our room which was absolutely delicious.
There are three private onsens which you may enter if the occupied light indicator is off. When you enter the private onsen, you lock the door to the bath’s change room and you have the entire area (the bath, shower, and change room) all to yourself. There was no reservation system to use the private baths, so I imagine you have to periodically check the occupied lights if it is during a busy time. Since we also had our own in-room bath in the Hana room, we only visited one of the three other private baths. As expected, the water felt fantastic, truly a relaxing experience.
Breakfast is served in the public dining area at the time you picked during check-in. Japanese or Western style options are available.
During our stay, we strolled around town and one of our favorite spots is Shima no Oketsu. It’s a pleasant 25-30 minute walk from the ryokan to this site where you can climb down a set of stairs to get up close to the river. Very beautiful water color and landscape, you can sit down and soak your feet for a bit while you enjoy a bento box and relax.
Overall, a highly recommended ryokan in a lovely town. The private baths are great for couples and even first time onsen goers who want to get used to Japanese onsen do’s-and-don’ts without worrying about embarrassing yourself (and then take your newly found courage and try the public baths later).
